Reading the bay in real time
----------------------------

The numbers above come straight from SHOM's published predictions for the Saint-Malo reference port (n° 2025-209), shifted for the bay's local geometry. The hero shows whether the water is rising or falling right now, the next high and low water times in legal French time, and the coefficient of the cycle currently underway. Two cycles run every twenty-four hours and fifty minutes, so the pattern shifts by roughly fifty minutes per day. A coefficient of 95 or above marks a spring tide; below that the bay still empties and refills, but the change is gentler.

What this page cannot tell you is the actual water level in centimetres. SHOM's model assumes calm air and standard atmospheric pressure. A strong onshore wind, a deep low, or both together can push the real high water several decimetres above the published value, and the rare days the causeway submerges hinge on exactly that. The seventy-two hour outlook below pairs each upcoming tide with the live weather: rain, wind direction, and pressure tell you whether to trust the prediction or pad it. If you plan to walk on the foreshore at low tide, treat the schedule as a starting point, not a guarantee.

Source and accuracy. Predictions: SHOM (n° 2025-209), reference port Saint-Malo, distributed by the Office de Tourisme Mont Saint-Michel, Normandie. Times are in legal French time (CET in winter, CEST in summer). Strong onshore winds and low atmospheric pressure can raise actual water levels above prediction. The Tourist Office classifies "Mont becomes an island" days using local bay dynamics, not a simple coefficient threshold. Always verify on site before crossing.
