 Mont Saint-Michel island days 2026
====================================

On 3 days in 2026 the tide climbs high enough to submerge the causeway, and Mont Saint-Michel becomes a true island again, cut off from the mainland around high water.

Arrive about two hours before the flagged high tide: you need time to park on the mainland, take the shuttle or walk the footbridge, and find a spot on the ramparts before the water closes the ring around the rock.

Each date below carries its full tide schedule. Further down: how the official classification works, and the near-miss days that come close without cutting the Mont off.

What makes an official island day?
----------------------------------

The "Mont becomes an island" classification comes from the Office de Tourisme, which combines the tidal coefficient with local bay dynamics. It is not a flat coefficient cut-off: some days with a higher coefficient stay connected while a slightly lower one floods the causeway, because the shape of the bay decides how the last metres of water behave.

The times and coefficients here are SHOM predictions for calm weather. A strong onshore wind or low atmospheric pressure can push the real water level above the published figure, and a calm high-pressure day can do the opposite. Always check signage on site before crossing any part of the bay.

The near misses: coefficient 100+ without an island
---------------------------------------------------

11 days in 2026 reach coefficient 100 or above without the Mont officially becoming an island. The sea still surrounds the rock on three sides and the bay fills at walking speed; only the last stretch of the causeway stays above water. Even the highest tide of 2026, coefficient 105 on Apr 18, leaves the causeway dry.

  Frequently asked questions
--------------------------

  ### How many days does Mont Saint-Michel become an island in 2026?

▾ On 3 days in 2026 the tide submerges the causeway and cuts Mont Saint-Michel off from the mainland. The dates come from the Office de Tourisme classification, which weighs local bay dynamics alongside the tidal coefficient.

   ### What time should I arrive on an island day?

▾ About two hours before the flagged high tide. The final flood moves fast, and you need time for parking, the shuttle or footbridge, and finding a viewpoint. Each card above lists the exact high tide time for its date.

   ### Why do higher coefficients not always make the Mont an island?

▾ Water level decides it, not the coefficient alone. Wind, atmospheric pressure, and the bay's own dynamics move the real level above or below the prediction, so the Office de Tourisme sets island days case by case rather than from a threshold.

Source and accuracy. Predictions: SHOM (n° 2025-209), reference port Saint-Malo, distributed by the Office de Tourisme Mont Saint-Michel, Normandie. Times are in legal French time (CET in winter, CEST in summer). Strong onshore winds and low atmospheric pressure can raise actual water levels above prediction. The Tourist Office classifies "Mont becomes an island" days using local bay dynamics, not a simple coefficient threshold. Always verify on site before crossing.
